DANICA STILL HASN’T DELIVERED
With a new primary sponsor in Nature’s
Bakery, a new crew chief in Billy Scott and a new
three-year contract with Stewart-Haas Racing,
Danica Patrick entered the season with reason
for optimism. But unfortunately for the Sprint Cup
Series’ only female driver, the year produced little
more than a continuation of her struggles from her
first three seasons in NASCAR’s No. 1 division.
For the fourth time in as many seasons, Patrick
failed to win a race or make the Chase. In some
ways, her performance actually dropped off from
2015, when she had a better average finishing position and scored a still-career-best finish of sixth.
Unlike in her previous three seasons, Patrick failed
to score a single top- 10 finish in 2016. If there’s any
positive to be gleaned, it’s that she netted four top-
15 finishes and led 30 laps – double the number
she had led in any previous season.
With two years left on Patrick’s contract, however, it’s hard to imagine her making any quantum
performance leaps in the foreseeable future.
